Oyo South Senator, Dr Kola Balogun Urges Residents to Participate In Ongoing PVC Registration - Southwest-Frontier News

The Senator representing Oyo South District, Dr Mohammed Kola Balogun has called for participation in the ongoing continous voters registration exercise

In 2019,  28,614,190 voted, which is approximately 30 percent of the voting populace.

Furthermore, more than 10 million people within the voting populace did not register. These numbers are discouraging and do not encourage a proper democratic process. In view of this, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has started the online Continous Voters Exercise which would encourage active participation within the voting population.

The People’s Democratic Party has also started its online membership registration to encourage citizens to join the biggest party in Africa. According to Senator Balogun in a statement made available to SOUTHWEST-FRONTIER NEWS through his media aide Rotimi Johnson (Ojasope) said; “Electioneering remains the only viable means of choosing the government we want and rejecting ones we don’t in a democracy. As we all know, Voting is a civic duty. However, there are processes which are precedents to the exercise of which registration of eligible citizens as voters is the basic.  In this light,  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has opened her portal for Nigerians within the voting age to register and validate their status as voters.  I am using this medium to appeal to us to ensure that we register before the portal closes in the first quarter of 2022”.

The distinguished Senator admonishes citizens within the voting populace in Oyo South senatorial district to participate in the ongoing exercise.

BREAKING: JAMB Cancels Cut-Off Mark - Southwest-Frontier News

JAMB Registrar, Oloyede

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB,has cancelled national admission benchmark, otherwise called cut-off mark.

With the scrapping of the age-long method, each of the nation’s tertiary institutions is now authorised to peg its admission benchmark.

The decision was taken at the 2021 policy meeting which was held virtually, Tuesday, and presided over by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.

Already, universities, polytechnics and colleges of education have sent their various cut-off marks to JAMB.

Speaking during the meeting, the Registrar of JAMB Prof. Is-haq Oloyede said some universities such as University of Maiduguri proposed 150, Usman Dan Fodio University Sokoto proposed 140, Pan Atlantic University proposed 210, University of Lagos 200, Lagos State University190, Covenant University190, Bayero University Kano, 180.

The stakeholders also approved October 29, 2021 as deadline for the closure of amendments for 2021 admissions for .

On the deadline for the closure of admissions, the stakeholders resolved to allow the ministry to decide as they could not agree on the December 31, 2021 deadline for all public institutions and January 31st 2022 for all public institutions.

Stakeholders also adopted the 2021 admission guidelines, which provide that all applications for part time or full time programmes fo degree, NCE, OND, and others must be posted only through JAMB.

The meeting approved that for Direct Entry, DE, the maximum score a candidate can present is 6 and the minimum is 2 or E, as required by law.

Speaking on other admission criteria, he said the candidate’s credentials must be uploaded on CAPS and recommended by the institution, JAMB approves and the candidate accepts the offer of admission.

He said if candidates have not accepted an offer, the institution can change the candidate after informing JAMB.

Also approved at the policy were the guidelines that every institution is at liberty to admit candidates based on its own minimum score approved by the institution and the policy meeting.

The meeting also resolved that every institution should maintain its own minimum score as approved by the policy meeting.

According to the stakeholders, the 2021 admissions will be conducted only through CAPS, no institution is allowed to admit candidates without uploading their details on CAPS.

Oloyede further disclosed that for 2021/2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, the board is introducing two new subjects: computer studies and physical and health education, bringing to a total of 25 subjects.

The stakeholders also exempted prison inmates, visually impaired and foreign candidates from sitting for post UTME exercise.

Speaking on the 2020 admissions, Oloyede said out of the 956,809 admission spaces in the 962 higher education institutions in the country about 600,000 have so far been admitted.

While saying there are many admission spaces that have not been filled up in several courses due to lack of qualified candidates, Oloyede said private universities in the country were only able to admit 36,381 candidates out of the 120,938 spaces available to them.

Declaring the policy meeting open, Minister of Education, Adamu, commended JAMB for introducing use of National Identification Number, NIN, in the registration process for UTME.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, the minister said the use of NIN drastically reduced examination malpractice in the 2021 exam, adding that the West African Examination Council, WAEC, will also follow similar path by adopting mandatory use of NIN.

“I am enthused that the last examination recorded the lowest the lowest cases of examination irregularities in the history of the Board because those who will normally have exploited the weak links through biometrics infractions had been effectively check-mated with the introduction of NIN by JAMB.. .

“It is gratifying that the WAEC has decided to follow the path of using NIN to curb examination malpractices. The Ministry is presently considering other ways of using using the NIN to uncover some other admissio irregularities and all perpetrators including their collaborators in the institutions would be made to face the consequences. “

On illegal admissions being conducted by some tertiary institutions, the minister expressed concerns that the government’s directive that all admissions should be done through JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS, is being violated.

He directed JAMB to furnish government with the list of affected institutions for necessary punishments.

His words : “It is saddening that despite the clear directives at previous policy meetings some institutions still illegally admitted candidates outside CAPS. I consider such act as a direct affront on the system and appropriate sanctions shall be applied on those found to have been in such disruptive act.

“Similarly, any institution that issued admission letter to candidates outside CAPS will be punished for such gross indiscipline and fraud.

” The consequence of admissions conducted outside of CAPS is grievous. It subjects the candidates to gloom future as nemesis of illegal admission awaits them at the completion of study when it will be impossible to take full advantage of the acquired certificates.

“As a demonstration of our resolve, I have directed JAMB to bring forward for appropriate sanctions, the list of all institutions involved in the violation of the directive of government which was was personally conveyed by me at the 2018 policy meeting in Gbongan, Osun State.”

BREAKING: Court Stops DSS, AGF From Arresting Igboho - Southwest-frontier News

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan on Monday extended an interim order restraining the Department of State Services, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), from arresting, killing, or harassing Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho.

The court presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola also extended the order stopping the DSS and AGF from freezing the accounts of the embattled activist facing trial in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

Lead counsel for Igboho, Yomi Aliyu (SAN), confirmed the development to The PUNCH on Monday after the ruling.

He said, “The judge said the interim order of injunction should continue until September 7 when we will go back to court.”

It had earlier reported that Justice Akintola had on August 4, 2021, ordered the secret police and the AGF not to arrest Igboho or freeze his bank accounts.

Counsel for the AGF, E. Simeon, had appealed the court to vacate its earlier restraining judgement but Aliyu said he had filed for an extension of the order on August 26, 2021, therefore, the new application should not be granted.

Simeon consequently sought another adjournment for him to reply to the application as the time frame of seven days had not elapsed.

On his part, the DSS lawyer, T. Nurudeen, said he had not been served with the new processes, urging the court to adjourn the case.

Justice Akintola subsequently adjourned the case till September 7, 2021, for hearing.

Igboho had through his counsel approached the court and filed an originating summon alongside an application praying the court to stop the DSS and the AGF from arresting him.

He is also seeking N5bn damages for the destruction of his house and cars.

Igboho, wanted by the DSS, has been in detention in Cotonou, Benin Republic, since July 19, 2021, when he was arrested at an airport as he tried to board a Germany-bound flight.

The DSS had raided his Ibadan residence on July 1, 2021, killed two of his associates and arrested 12 others.

Igboho and the leader of the umbrella body of the Yoruba self-determination group known as Ilana Omo Oodua, Banji Akintoye, have been seen together at press conferences and rallies championing the cause to secede from the Nigerian state and establish a Yoruba Nation despite the Federal Government’s insistence of a united and indissoluble Nigeria.

Akintoye, 86, said he relocated to Benin Republic to ensure the release of 48-year-old Igboho.

Insecurity: Defend Yourselves Before Nigeria Becomes an Islamic Country – Gov Diri Tell Christians | Southwest-frontier News

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has charged Christians to defend themselves and their faith in the face of troubling security challenges in the country.

The Governor while playing host to the General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church, Reverend Sam Aboyeji and the Senior Pastor of God’s Power Dominion Ministries International, Pastor I.A. Charles, at the Government House, Yenagoa, insinuated that failure of Christians to defend themselves in the face of sustained attacks on their faith would lead to Nigeria becoming a predominantly Muslim country as Turkey.

The Governor, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, noted that the attacks on Christians in the Othman Republic was what led to Turkey today being dominated by Muslims.

According to him, negligence and religious gentility led to that “fatal mistake” which he urged should not be allowed to repeat itself anywhere in the world.

The Governor therefore urged Christians not to allow themselves to be overrun and killed with ease by those who see them as enemies

We’re Working With The UN To Seize Parts Of Nigeria From Buhari’s Control: Wole Soyinka | Southwest-frontier News

The Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has called on

the United Nations to step in and take control of parts of the

country as the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari has

failed to fulfil its responsibilities under international laws.

Mr Soyinka said the international community “has a right and responsibility to declare sections of the country as a protectorate under the UN,” asking that the international body pull a “Namibia” and protect certain regions of the country.

“We are calling on the United Nations to intervene and stop this slave trade,” Mr Soyinka declared at an event in Lagos on Friday.

He explained that when protocols and conditions given by the UN and signed by a said nation are violated, such nation has failed to live up to its responsibilities.

“…the protocols are there for any nation to champion the cause of these children and thereby enforce on this government international intervention in whatever form,” Mr Soyinka said.

Mr Soyinka’s comments refer to school kidnappings, such as the Bethel Baptist School, Kaduna where 32 students were released from their captors on Friday.  Mr Soyinka described the kidnapping and targeting of school children as slavery, which he stated is more lucrative within the country than exporting people.

Mr Soyinka said he’d been in talks with governments and foreign heads of states, appealing that they elevate the targeting of children and the “forced repatriation to the attention of the United Nations in the next General Assembly.”

The kidnappings, rife in the northern region of the country, and the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to control and eliminate the threat are direct violations of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Across Nigeria, several attacks have been orchestrated by Fulani herdsmen and bandits as the reign of terror continue to spread from the North, these attacks have led to the loss of lives and damage to property.

Investigations revealed that the Nigerian Government, in a secret program, rehabilitate surrendered insurgents and attempt to integrate them into society, this is being done with no formal pardons.

Mr Buhari has often defended the actions of these insurgents. In July, Mr Buhari commended security agencies for raiding Sunday Igboho’s house, saying Mr Igboho has been disturbing the peace with his campaign against the herdsmen.

Peoples Gazette earlier reported how the presidency kicked against the ultimatum given by the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, to vacate the forest reserves.

The state government had hinged the decision on the criminal acts linked to the herders operating from the forests. But Mr Buhari argued that the murderous herders had rights to inhabit any portion of the Nigerian territory.
