Fresh Crisis Threatens Oyo APC Congress, As Akin Oke Detects Alterations On Delegate List

The caretaker chairman and leader of All Progressive Congress in Oyo state, Chief Akin Oke has raised alarm after detected that the list of the delegates for tomorrow’s congress has been falsified.

Oke, the outgoing chairman of Oyo APC alleged Gambo Lawan of bringing to the state a doctored delegate list which is totally against the harmonized lists prepared by the concerned party leaders in the state.

According to Chief Akin Oke, “ This afternoon, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State held a Stakeholders meeting on the State congress scheduled for tommorrow 30th October 2021..
At the meeting, the Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Alhaji Gambo Lawan handed over the result of the Ward and Local Congresses to me as demanded over the past weeks by members of the party. It is with sadness and heavy heart that I report that the result is totally different from the result handed over to the Ward Congress and Local Government Committees.

I wish to note that ahead of the ward and local government congresses, the stakeholders in the party resolved to adopt a consensus method to generate the ward and local government executives. To actualize this, leaders of all tendencies in the party met in their respective wards and local governments to agree on consensus lists. The lists so agreed upon were transmitted through the party congress committees in the respective constituencies to the party at the state level. The officials of the party and members of the congress committees from Abuja jointly collated the results from the Ward and local governments.
It is important to note that Alhaji Lawan Gambo after the Ward congress addressed the press and asserted that there was no parallel congress in Oyo State. The Chairman of the Local Government Congress, Mr Hilary Adamu also addressed the press after the local government congress and noted that there were no parallel congresses in the 33 local government areas of the state. The assertions by the two chairmen confirmned the success of the harmonization efforts that produced the consensus lists.

It therefore remains questionable where and how the results handed over to me by Alhaji Gambo today was generated.

I have been bombarded by critical stakeholders and members of the party across the state over the authenticity of the result. I have communicated the reaction of the party members to the leadership of the party in Abuja. I am also under immense pressure by the member of the party over the fate of the party congress schedule for tomorrow.

As a responsible party leader, I wish to state categorically that the lists which were given to me this afternoon do not reflect the results which emanated from the Ward and Local Government Congresses as done on July 31 and September 4, 2021 respectively. To this end, but to call for an urgent meeting of stakeholders of the party for 9a.m tomnmorrow Saturday 3Oth October 2021 at the State Secretariat to determine what to do to manage the tension in the party and avert the orgy of bloodshed being threatened by most members of the party across the state.

While we are assuring the whole world that we shall do everything lawfully possible to resist the evil attempt by some unscrupulous elements to throw our dear party into unnecessary crisis, I use this medium to appeal to leaders and members of our great party to remain calm and let us work together to manage the tense situation in the state. It is my conviction that the party shall get over the present challenge more united and stronger.

2023: Jega, Utomi, Agbakoba, to launch party against APC, PDP in November

The National Consultative Front (NCFront) co-chairperson will soon meet Prof. Attahiru Jega and Olisa Agbakoba (SAN)-led National Political Coalition on Electoral Reforms initiated on October 1.

The NCFront made the disclosure on Friday while announcing plans to launch a credible “alternative mega ideological party by November”.

A statement by Tanko Yunusa, Head of Public Affairs, declared that the aim is to “depose the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP)”.

He said the consensus among NCFront members is the exploration of electoral alliance with existing political parties with similar ideological values.

The spokesman said the body has mobilised stakeholders to work out the modalities of ensuring equal benefits and responsibilities for partners fusing into the mega party.

Yunusa said Utomi’s meeting with Jega, a former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, and Agbakoba, will discuss how to get the civil society, labour movement, like-minded individuals, political leaders, and groups on board.

“The Nigerian people and electorates are tired of the present exploitative misrule of the country by both these parties and have therefore rejected them ahead of the 2023 elections.

“It has become a historical duty for leaders of conscience under the umbrella of the NCFront given the rescue mission of the Front to provide a formidable credible alternative for our frustrated electorates and citizens ahead of the 2023 elections.

“This is in order to save Nigeria from a looming anarchy that may arise from hostilities against the 2023 elections based on the perception that it holds no value and genuine promise for the survival of Nigerians and Nigeria”, the statement added.

PDP National Convention: We've Achieve 80% Consensus - Says PDP Governors

Rising from their meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the Governors identified capacity cooperation as the only option towards unlocking a new Nigeria that the people have been yearning for.

JUST IN: PDP convention to hold Saturday, Sunday as Court of Appeal ‘strikes out’ Secondus case seeking to stop it

From Right: Chief Uche Secondus, Embattled Chairman of PDP, and, party logo.

A Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South South Nigeria, has struck out the case before it filed at the instance of Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the party’s National Convention holding Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 October, 2021.

The DEFENDER’s effort to get official confirmation of the judgement was yet to succeed as at time of filing this report as network failed communication with our Port Harcourt source while PDP leadership was not reachable.

However, a Kano State registered member of the PDP, who spoke on phone with The DEFENDER from Abuja Friday morning, confirmed that the information about the judgement was correct, and that the PDP national convention will hold as scheduled.

The source, who sought not to be mentioned, said: “It is true that the appeal court in Port Harcourt has struck out the case filed by suspended chairman of the party, Chief Uche Secondus against the national convention, which will hold beginning from tomorrow Saturday and ending on Sunday,” he said.

The Appeal Court had Thursday reserved ruling on an appeal filed by the suspended National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Uche Secondus, urging the court to suspend the party’s national convention scheuled for 30 and 31 October, 2021 in Abuja.

The DEFENDER earlier reported former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye confidently saying in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today that the court’s judgement was going to favour the PDP on Friday that the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) would be put to shame.

Melaye had been under heavy attack for repeatedly blaming the APC for the crisis in the party, although he was reminded by the television program anchor that ‘PDP internal affair’ and not APC was topic of discussion.

Why I Resigned From Sen Kola Balogun's Political Fold - Ojasope Breaks Silence - Southwest-Frontier News

I have been greatly inundated with calls and messages in the few hours and though it was not new, being the subject matter in need of clarification was quite different and unexpected. My resignation was not designed to be media issue but I take full responsibility for the slip and I have apologized to Distinguished Senator Kola Balogun for any embarrassment that might have caused.

I need to set the record straight that Senator Kola Balogun is still the best thing that can happen to Oyo South District in this political dispensation. I have written many wonderful things about Senator Kola Balogun and my opinion of him has not and cannot change just like that. Beyond partisanship, he is one politician I would love to remain close to but the decision to quit his political fold now is beyond me, despite my strong love for him, his family and Prince Adeniran Adeyoju. There is no better time to do that than now, before it would cause too much political assumptions and unnecessary speculations.

Politics is very interesting and delicate, so I was not surprised that some people are swift in catching on the slip. However as a politician, the wish of what is left of my followers and desires of my well wishers is that I seek better political relevance which some people in that fold have sworn and are working assiduously to destroy; not withstanding my dedication and sacrifices they believe I don't belong to that fold.

I have served this great man to the best of my ability and I must confess that he is such a great political product anyone would enjoy marketing. Serving him this 3yrs have taught me many things and I am grateful for that. I am very grateful to Jagun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Olumuyiwa Makinde who brought me into the fold after very strong recommendations and President of Providence Coalition, Prince Adeniran Adeyoju who never waivered in his confidence in my abilities.

On my part and as it was clearly stated in my resignation letter; "I am still submissive to your leadership and I assure you of my commitment to this great vision of service to God through humanity". I hope my successor takes the organization to higher level and I assure him/her of my cooperation if such so desires.

Moremi Ajasoro was the brave and beautiful Queen of Ile Ife who saved her people from the Igbo forest raiders who troubled the peace of the town. Moremi hailed from the Lukugba compound in Ile-Ife while her mother was a Princess from Offa. Moremi was also the wife of Oranmiyan, the King of Ile Ife during the time of the raids and the son of Oduduwa, the progenitor of Yoruba race.

Moremi and The Igbo Forest Raiders:
Legend has it that there was a time in Ile Ife, Osun State, that raiders from the forest constantly robbed the people of their peace and freedom. These raiders were known as Igbo/Ugbo. The people of Ile Ife thought the raiders were spirits sent by the gods to punish them because of the way they (the raiders) appeared, covered in raffia palms, during raids. It should be noted that the Igbo forest raiders are not related to the present Igbo people of eastern Nigeria.
The raid went on for long to the extent that the people of Ile Ife thought of giving up after several fruitless sacrifices to appease their gods. Queen Moremi was a patriot at heart; she couldn’t endure seeing her people suffer and the unhappiness that beclouded her husband, the king – Oranmiyan, thus, she sought help from an oracle which instructed her to visit the goddess of Esimirin River.

The goddess promised to help Moremi but at the expense of her most precious possession. Moremi hastily agreed, being a rich queen, she thought that would not be a problem. The goddess instructed her to deliberately let the Igbo raiders capture her and take her captive during the next raid. The next time the scary-looking Igbo raiders came, Moremi did as she was told, she let them captured her.
Being a very beautiful woman, the leader of the Igbo raiders fell in love with Moremi and made her one of his wives. Moremi lived with the forest raiders for some time, it was during this time that she discovered that the raiders were not spirits sent by the gods but humans dressed in masks and raffia palms. Having discovered this secret, she escaped to Ile Ife and relayed the information to the King and his subjects.
The people of Ile Ife were happy and thanked Moremi for her patriotism and bravery. The king instructed his army and the people to be armed with burning torches when next the raiders attacked.
The raiders came, as usual, with the thought of scaring the people but met their waterloo when they were attacked with burning torches. Their raffia palms easily caught fire and they were sent scrambling back into the forest, defeated!

Moremi’s Sacrifice To The Goddess:
After the victory, Moremi Ajasoro returned to the Esimirin river to thank the goddess and fulfil her pledge. Moremi went with cows and cowries but was horrified when the goddess demanded for her only son, Olurogbo. The goddess refused her pleas and insisted on having her son. She was helpless; in sorrow, Moremi sacrificed her only son, Olurogbo, to the river goddess.

In a short period of time, the sad news had reached the town and the people rushed down to the river, in tears, to sympathize with their Queen. They all pledged to be the sons and daughters of Moremi Ajasoro and that is why till today, natives of Ile Ife are referred to as the children of Moremi Ajasoro.
However, another version of the legend that Olurogbo did not die but was restored back to life by Olodumare who pitied the plight of Moremi. Thus, when the people had departed, Olurogbo resurrected and climbed up to heaven where he is said to have lived ever since with the gods of Yorubaland.
Immortalizing Queen Moremi Ajasoro:
To remember Moremi, the Edi festival was instituted. The Edi Festival is a celebration of independence for Ife, it started as a means of celebrating the role the legendary Queen Moremi played and the ultimate sacrifice the Queen Moremi Ajasoro made for the people of Yorubaland!
In recent times, many places are named after Moremi for her heroic deeds. She has been immortalized through books, songs, operas, movies and statues. A 42 feet statue, known as “Queen Moremi Statue of Liberty,” is the tallest statue in Nigeria and the fourth tallest in Africa. SOUTHWEST-FRONTIER  gathered that Moremi Liberty statue is erected in the same compound she lived during her time.
