Women Who Have Sex More Frequently Have Better Developed Brains – Research Shows

Researchers found an association between the frequency of genital intercourse and the thickness of the individually mapped genital field.

A new scientific study published last week has identified the brain region linked to genital touch in women, and found that it was more developed in volunteers who reported having more sex.

The research involved stimulating the clitorises of 20 adult females while their brains were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

The researchers clarify that the paper, published in the journal JNeurosci, does not answer questions like whether having a larger area devoted to genital stimulation makes women more sensitive to touch.
It also doesn’t tell us whether having a more developing brain region devoted to genital touch prompts more intercourse, or whether more intercourse expands the region, like working out a muscle.

But the results could be used in future to target treatments for people who have, for example, been impacted by sexual violence, or have sexual dysfunction.

“It’s completely under studied, how the female genitals are represented in the somatosensory cortex in humans, and whether it has at all the capacity to change in relation to experience or use,” co-author Christine Heim, a professor of medical psychology at Charite University Hospital in Berlin, told AFP.

The somatosensory cortex receives and processes sensory information from across the body. Each part of the body corresponds to a different area of the cortex, forming a representational map.

But until now, the part of the map that corresponds to the female genitals was a subject of debate.

Previous studies had sometimes placed it under the representation of the foot, others near that of the hip.

The reason was imprecise stimulation techniques.
For example, during self or partner delivered manual stimulation, other parts of the body were touched at the same time, or the process triggered arousal, which blurred the results.

In 2005, other researchers were able to develop a technique that caused very localised tactile stimulation for penises, allowing them to find the precise region devoted to this area in males. But there was no similar breakthrough for females.

For the new study, 20 women in good health between the ages of 18 and 45 were selected.

For stimulation, a small round object specifically designed for the task was applied above the underwear at the level of the clitoris.

Air jets caused the device’s membrane to vibrate slightly.

The approach was designed to be “as comfortable as possible” for the volunteers, said co-author John-Dylan Haynes of the Berlin Center for Advanced Neuroimaging at Charite.
They were stimulated eight times, for 10 seconds each time, interspersed with 10 seconds of rest.

The same device was used on the back of the right hand as a control.

The results of the brain imaging confirmed that the somatosensory cortex represented the female genitals next to the hips, as they are in males, but the precise location varied for each woman tested.

The researchers then investigated whether this area had different characteristics depending on sexual activity.

The 20 women were asked about the frequency of their intercourse over the past year, as well as since the beginning of their sexual life.
Then, for each of them, the researchers determined the 10 most activated points in the brain during stimulation, and measured the thickness of those areas.

“We found an association between the frequency of genital intercourse and the thickness of the individually mapped genital field,” said Heim.

The more sex, the bigger the region.

The authors are hesitant to say more sex drives that expansion, until future study confirms it.

But there are hints from past research.

First, it’s well established that the more certain parts of the brain are used, the bigger they become: this is known as brain plasticity.

The hippocampus region of the brain in London taxi drivers expands with navigating experience.

Second, prior animal studies showed that the stimulation of the genitals of rats and mice effectively led to an expansion of the area of the brain corresponding to these organs.
That research also did not determine whether a larger area resulted in better perception.

But Heim herself had previously shown in a 2013 study that people who have suffered traumatic sexual violence had a thinning of the brain areas devoted to genitals.

“We speculated back then, that this could be the response of the brain to limit the detrimental perception of the abuse,” she said.

She hopes her research will help inform future therapies aimed at rehabilitating this region among abuse survivors.

Ila-Orangun was founded by Orangun Fagbamila Ajagun-nla, (the progenitor of Igbomina race) a son of the legendary Oduduwa. However, opinion differs as to how the people got the name “Ila-Orangun” for their settlement. A version goes thus: the name “Ila-Orangun” was derived from the two settlements, which resulted from two separate events in the life of the founder. When Fagbamila Ajangu-nla was about to leave Ile-Ife to found his own kingdom, his father, Oduduwa gave him half (Ilaji) of his property. Also, the Odu Ifa that directed his exist from Ile Ife was “Ose meji” meaning “Oro mi gun” which when translated means my life plans are straight forward. Thus, the statement “Ilaji ni mo pin, Oro mi gun” later became “Ila-Orangun”.
Fagbamila was thereafter referred to as ‘ORAN-MI-GUN-ILE-NLA’, the origin of the full title ORANGUN ILE NLA. Fagbamila Ajagun-nla was a brave, powerful and Great War leader. He led olugbon, Aresa, Onikoyi and Olomu Aperan in various wars, to help his younger brother, Oranmiyan the first Alaafin of Oyo to conquer the Ibaribas and the Nupes. He reigned at Igbo Ajagun-nla for years. Fagbamila Ajagun-nla according to traditional evidence did not die but sank into the ground. In asserting this claim, the existence of a deity called ‘EBORA ILA’ which is in the custody of the Abodiyo, a chief of Ila-Orangun is believed to be Fagbamila’s spirit. However, Fagbamila was succeeded by one of his sons, Amotagesi who reigned for a short period at Igbo Ajagun-nla before migrating with his people to a new settlement christened Ila-Yara. The rationale behind the migration is yet to be explained by any available account. However, Orangun Amotagesi was succeeded by Orangun Ogboye, who was later succeeded by Orangun Oboyun.
On the death of Orangun Oboyun there arose a serious tussle on the succession bid between Apakiimo (the father of Oke-Ila-Orangun) and his younger brother, Oluokun (who later reigned as Orangun Arutu at Ila Magbon) which eventually led to the ruins of Ila-Yara. On leaving Ila-Yara, Ifa had divined that the spike of ‘Opa Orere’ being carried along their route to a new settlement should not be allowed to touch the ground until they would have got to such spot that they considered suitable for permanent abode. Incidentally, Adegbiji Oluokun’s younger brother who was holding the staff inadvertently dropped it at a point when he was pressed to answer the call of nature; an incident but which was unknown to other members of the entourage. With the menace of earthworm in their later settlement, Ila Magbon, they knew something was amiss and shifted their base on a simple confession by Adegbiji after Ifa has revealed the truth of the matter. Enroute their journey to the new settlement, Arutu Olokun got bored with age and commanded the ground to open up, and he disappeared in to its vault together with his Olori and his Babakekere.

The spot where this historical phenomenon occurred is known as “Para Oke” and it’s being worshipped by the descendants of Arutu to date. Sequel to this historical event, the leadership fell on Adegbiji who became the Orangun Igbonnibi in the present site.

Another version says that Oduduwa has rarely been blessed with male children; he therefore consulted Ifa which advised him on what to do in order to have a male children. This account goes further that, having carried out what Ifa advised, Oduduwa was blessed with a male child whom he named Ifagbamila (Ifa has saved me) which brings to memory that he offered placatory sacrifice to Ifa before the child was conceived. Also Oduduwa was overwhelmed with joy by this development which he saw as a victory over his enemies. He therefore added other tell-tale names to the one already given to the lucky child. He called him ‘Oran-mi-gun’ (lit. means my cause is straight forward) which was contracted to ORANGUN. Young Fagbamila was born on a day known in the Ifa oracular calendar as “Ojo Ila-ye-fun”.It holds this out as explaining why ILA has come to be the name tag of his ultimate seat of government.
Anothetr tradition holds that ILA was corrupted from NLA (big). This has been rationalized by calling the fact that Fagbamila inherited all the wives of Oduduwa who were then housed in a mansion...
